Five people on board a missing submersible died in a “catastrophic explosion,” a US Coast Guard official said on Thursday, bringing a grim end to the search international agreement for the ship that went missing during its deep-sea voyage to the wreck of the Titanic.

An unmanned robot deployed from a Canadian ship spotted the wreckage of the Titan submersible on Thursday morning about 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic wreck, and 4 kilometers above the surface of the ocean.

. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said at a news conference that the debris here is consistent with a catastrophic explosion of the submersible. Mauger said it was too early to know when the submersible crashed. Mr Mauger said the robot on the ocean floor would continue to collect evidence, but it was not clear if recovering the bodies would be possible given the nature of the crash and the harsh conditions at those depths.

 Officials say five major pieces of Titan have been found, including most of the hull. Five people on board include British billionaire and adventurer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani-born business magnate Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son Suleman; French oceanographer and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who has visited the wreck dozens of times; and Stockton Rush, the American founder and chief executive officer of OceanGate, who piloted the submersible.
