Devil’s Descent ( slide ). Utah Morgan County USA. Look at the illustration to see how tiny the men on horses are compared to the structure
The Devil’s Slide is amazing.
The devil has 3 toys in a canyon in Morgan county, or so the locals say. The first 2 are pretty cool, and if you’re in the area, you should check them out.
The first is called the Devil’s Slide. It is a really unique geological formation where 2 layers or rock have tilted up to a 90 degree angle and then eroded so there is a space in between. The effect is pretty magnificent, and this is easily the best of the 3 formations. The slide is pretty large, running a few hundred yards up the hill, and one thing I liked about it, is that if you blinked, you’d miss it, because you can only see it when you are at a perfect angle to look into it. There is no access to climb the slide, but there is a pullout that is marked as Devil’s Slide Scenic Area between Morgan and Henefer, just east of exit 111. There are pullouts on both sides of 1-84.
We were fascinated by this unique rock formation.
There is a special pull out right on the freeway so you can see the Devil’s Slide.
This photo is from the other side of the freeway where you can see the top a little more clearly.
The second of the devil’s toys is called the Devil’s Looking Glass, and it’s an arch. It is just a few miles from the slide, so you should stop and see it, too, even though it isn’t quite as impressive. To get to the Looking Glass, continue up the road toward Henefer but take the Croyden exit (#111) and turn under the trestle bridge. Continue 0.4 miles to the Holcim Cement Plant building on the left side of the road and use the large pullout on the right side of the road. Park and look up the hill and you’ll see a beautiful little hole in the rock. The arch looks small at the distance from the road, but it is still pretty cool.
We are always excited to find arches in Utah other than in Arches National Park
Our son is standing on the road, so you can see how far away the arch is.
It’s a neat little arch!
The third toy is called Devil’s Gate, and too be honest, you should just skip it. It is nearly impossible to see from the freeway, and if you pullover, you are taking a considerable risk. Additionally, it is not very impressive from the viewpoint at the freeway. But, if you insist, you can catch a glimpse of Devil’s Gate down the canyon toward Ogden. Right at the county line between Morgan and Weber if you look on the north side of the road and down, you can see the gate. It took us a few passes to make sure we were seeing it, so I’ll be a little more specific: Drive west down the canyon. After you pass the county line into Weber county, look down and left over the barrier and you’ll see a narrow “gate” in the rock that appears to have an access road that hasn’t been used in a while. We’re pretty sure this is Devil’s Gate. If you know different, please leave us a comment. Travelling east from Ogden, the gate is a little over a mile past the old water station or electrical station or whatever it is in the middle of the freeway near mile marker 91.
