Cowboys news: KaVontae Turpin will try to make a case for WR3
Your Sunday morning Cowboys news.
A dark horse to win the WR3 job for the Cowboys is being overlooked – Mario Herrera Jr., Inside the Star
Could this speedy return specialist snatch the WR3 role for the Cowboys this season?
For some reason, KaVontae Turpin is being completely overlooked when we talk about wide receivers who can make an impact on the Cowboys’ offense in 2024. Turpin was signed by the Cowboys from the USFL after winning MVP of that league just before training camp of the 2022 season. He was signed for his speed and shiftiness, specifically to boost an anemic return game for ST Coach Jon “Bones” Fassel.
It didn’t take long for him to cement his place in the team after returning not one, but two kicks for touchdowns in a preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Turpin has yet to return one for a touchdown in the regular season, but the new kickoff rules could change that. Perhaps that is why he is being overlooked for more offensive snaps. Everyone is excited to see him impact on returns, forgetting he can contribute to the offense.
I’m here to tell you he shouldn’t be overlooked. Turpin saw an increased role in the offense in 2023 after playing primarily special teams in his rookie season. I believe a more increased role in Mike McCarthy’s offense in year three shouldn’t be ruled out. The opportunity is there, and the Cowboys appeared to trust him more towards the end of the season. Turpin’s total stats are nothing to write home

about, but the impact of his touches should raise some eyebrows as to why he hasn’t been used more often.
In 2023, Turpin received 22 touches on offense, 10 rushes and 12 receptions averaging 10.3 yards per touch. Turpin literally averages a first down each time he touches the ball. New wide receivers like 6th-round draft pick Ryan Flournoy can’t say that yet.
Cowboys Jake Ferguson feels he can be a lot better after Year 2 jump-Matthew Lenix Jr., Blogging the Boys
Jake Ferguson confident that he can surpass his exceptional 2023 season.
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted tight end Jake Ferguson in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, they already had a TE1 in Dalton Schultz. So, that meant that Ferguson was going to be used a lot in 12 personnel as a blocker and take advantage of the opportunities he got here and there in the passing game. Despite only getting 22 targets, Ferguson caught 19 of them for 174 yards and two touchdowns. It was a small sample size, but his potential as a pass catchers was apparent.
Schultz was seeking a huge payday in 2023, and he got it, just not from the Cowboys. That put Ferguson firmly in the TE1 role in 2023, and he shined like a street light once the sun goes down. Ferguson finished second on the Cowboys to CeeDee Lamb in receptions (71) and receiving yards (761), and his five touchdowns were third on the team. Despite solidifying himself as the head honcho in the tight end room, Ferguson feels he’s only getting started.
“To me, I think I’m not even scratching my surface,” Ferguson said. “There’s so many things that I want to get better at and I know I can get better at. We watch film every day of different games, even the practices we’re doing now and I’m like, ‘OK, I can get a lot better still.’”
Ferguson also went into detail about why he made such a jump in his performance in 2023 compared to his rookie season. “I think just my consistency, you know, with my prep,” Ferguson said. “I think coach Wells and I do a great job of, you know, when it’s special teams period or maybe there isn’t enough time in a practice and we’ll stay together after practice and just work on the little things. Tracking the ball with your eyes, watching the ball hit your hands, your footwork, all the little things, both in the receiving and the blocking game. And then also off the field stuff. Just making sure my focus was purely on football, and I think that helped me focus a lot more on what I was doing each game and how to get better every time.”
Ferguson can do it all from the tight end spot. He can run the entire route tree, whether it be a curl, a flat, a vertical, a flat wheel route, you name it. He’s savvy enough to find holes in zone coverage, and he possesses good hands that can highpoint the ball if needed on contested passes. Ferguson is also good in the open field when it comes to getting yards after the catch. In a short time, he’s become a great security blanket for quarterback Dak Prescott.

Dak meets Fan of the Year after thankful draft-day message-Nick Eatman, Dallascowboys.com
Quarterback Dak Prescott’s humanitarianism makes special impact on a fan.
While Dak didn’t hear the announcement live, his other brother, Tad was watching. He quickly alerted Dak how his story has saved lives even in other countries. And that’s when the Cowboys quarterback went to work. On Friday night, Flores was a special guest of Dak during his annual “Faith, Fight, Finish Foundation” Gala, held in Dallas.
“To get that from my brother, knowing that I made a commitment about another brother … Tad sent it to me saying, ‘one life taken to save millions.’ It’s special. Blessed that he’s here. Flores and Prescott shared a moment before the gala, with several hugs as each of them thanked each other. “The first thing I would say is ‘thank you,’” Flores said to Dak in front of the cameras. “Thank you for everything. Thank you for inspiring me, for changing the world, for saving me. And I admire you in every aspect of your life.”
An emotional Prescott responded with another hug. “God Bless You,” Dak said. Dak has experienced more than his share of grief, from the death of his mother in 2013 after she lost her battle with cancer, to 2020 when his brother Jace committed suicide. Through it all, Prescott has never hid from the pain – instead embraced it and used it as the backbone for this Faith, Fight, Finish Foundation in an attempt to reach others going through their own kind of mental health issues.
Flores, obviously could relate. He became an avid Cowboys fan because of his father, who passed away in 2018. Flores, who lives in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico, has now taken over some of the fan websites his father created to cover the Cowboys. Flores was recently named the International Fan of the Year by the NFL, allowing him the chance to make the Cowboys’ pick. But he used the platform to honor Prescott, stating on the stage “I wouldn’t be standing here without Dak Prescott.”
