Phinsider Question Of The Day: 2024 Yardage Leader Edition
In the past couple of years, if I had asked who would lead the team in all-purpose yardage, we would all have said Tyreek Hill. It’s still possible, maybe even somewhat probable, that Hill will rule the roost again in 2024. For one thing, it seems as if the Miami Dolphins offense has intentionally targeted Hill the majority of the times, even if that meant that Tua Tagovailoa was clearly forcing the ball to get it to Tyreek. Sometimes, due 100% to Hill’s ridiculous athletic ability, the play still turned out okay, but others were disasters. I have gone over some of these plays repeatedly, and it’s clear that someone else was more open and thus more an obvious target, but Tua would rather risk the turnover than not push it to the highest-paid player on the roster.
I do get it. You are paying a king’s ransom for the guy, and he is the best player on the team, so you want to get your money’s worth out of him. I am all for him getting his fair share of touches and then some, but it seems to me that if your goal is getting the ball to him coming off him when he is not the best target on the play, it would eventually make him even more open at times if the entire defense did not have to only focus on him on every play. So, assuming that head coach Mike McDaniel was to get Tua to spread the ball around a bit more, who else would the ball go to?
Well, Jaylen Waddle is an obvious choice. Assuming that Malik Washington’s production at the collegiate level translates to the pros, he could easily blow the stat sheet up by working from the slot position. Then you have Raheem Mostert, who could also be used more as a pass-catching option out of the backfield, as he has shown good hands and the ability to get loose in space. The other option is obviously last year’s rookie sensation Devon Achane. I doubt anyone takes the all-purpose yardage title away from Hill, but if anyone is going to do it, I suspect that would be Achane. Achane showed us what he could be last season, and the coaching staff has now been working with him more as a receiver. Achane has the ability to be special, and I won’t get crazy and try to compare him to other players, but he reminds every one of us of someone else who was or is as similar in speed and ability that became an NFL superstar, even if we are not all thinking of the same individual.
So tonight’s question of the day is: Do you think Tyreek Hill will continue to be the all-purpose yardage leader in 2024, or will Devon Achane or possibly another player you have in mind dethrone him?
