Chiefs Training Camp: Day 9 observations from July 31
On Wednesday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to their field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for another practice of the team’s 2024 training camp.
This was the ninth of 19 public sessions on the practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. Nine of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.
Arrowhead Pride’s editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. Pete posted some observations on social media — starting with the beginning of a hot streak.
Wednesday was the hottest day in St. Joe thus far, with temperatures approaching 90 as practice concluded. The 10-day forecast dictates the team’s next five workouts will be scorchers.

It was a busy day in the medical tent.
That weather (and the wear and tear of the third week) led to the #Chiefs seeing multiple players leave during the practice, including LB Nick Bolton (elbow), TE Izaiah Gathings (hamstring), OL “Chu” Godrick (ankle), OL McKade Mettauer (ankle) and WR Kadarius Toney (ankle).

There was, however, some good news.
Kansas City did see some key returns Wednesday, with WR Hollywood Brown, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, DT Chris Jones and CB Jaylen Watson all returning to practice.
Brown and CEH were right back in the mix. Jones and Watson took it easy, with no team periods, like LG Joe Thuney.

The team ran a long-drive drill.
Late in practice, the Chiefs ran a 15-play situational long drive period that saw WRs Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice and Meocle Hardman, TE Travis Kelce and RB Isiah Pacheco involved. I thought this was Kelce’s best workout this camp. Heavily in the mix and bringing in the football.

We almost saw a behind-the-backer.
Fun moment: On a broken play rolling out to his right, Mahomes thought about flipping the ball behind his back, but it was just a fake in this instance.
This play from Mahomes has been teased for over a year and counting, and I do wonder if we see it at some point.

The defense was making it tough on Mahomes.
In 7-on-7 work, CB Kelvin Joseph had a pass breakup of Mahomes that was a near-interception. Kansas City had a number of bat-downs at the line, including one from DT Turk Wharton. I thought the coverage as a whole was good in this look.

Here’s the quarterback’s pass activity log.
Mahomes targets on the day (11-on-11)*: Rice (3), Brown, (2) Kelce (2), Skyy Moore (2), Pacheco (2), Hardman, Noah Gray, Jared Wiley, Worthy

The first-round rookie continues to get the starts at left tackle.
OL rotation watch: I noticed Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris rotating early, but it was Suamataia in at top-team left tackle for all the team periods. Rookie Hunter Nourzad continues to work at left guard as Thuney ramps up.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid on left tackle: “I love the [competition]. Both of them are competing their tails off. I feel comfortable with both of them at this point, where they’re at. They’ve just got to keep working and working to get better every day. And that’s what they’re…

Pete made notes on the one-on-ones.
I watched the OL/DL one-on-ones closely, noting a few standouts:
DL: Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Truman Jones, Wharton
OL: Mike Caliendo, CJ Hanson, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Nick Torres— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 31, 2024
And the second-team offensive line.

And how the defensive backs rotated.
Defensive back rotation watch: With Nazeeh Johnson and Watson still out of team, here was the rotation with Trent McDuffie inside
First team: Joshua Williams, Kelvin Joseph (outside), McDuffie (inside)
Second team: Ekow Boye Doe, Keith Taylor (outside), Nic Jones (inside)— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 31, 2024
Reid on cornerback rotation: “It’s been good for the young guys to get some reps in there. Watson came back, got some reps today, so getting back in the swing of things. If he starts working in, that will be a positive. For the young guys — the Josephs of the world — they all get…

Deneric Price still seems to be the No. 2 behind Pacheco.
9-on-7 run period order of RB touch (and number of rush attempts)
First team: Pacheco (4), Prince (4)
Second team: Carson Steele (2), Edwards-Helaire (2), Keontay Ingram (2)
Third team: Rees-Zammit (2), Emani Bailey (2)— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 31, 2024
There are still a lot of guys snagging kickoffs
Kickoff return pairs (in order of turn) during the special teams period: Nikko Remigio and Louis Rees-Zammit, Deneric Prince and Phillip Brooks, Montrell Washington and Skyy Moore, Mecole Hardman and Justyn Ross
— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 31, 2024
Remigio on the new kickoffs and lead KR role: “I feel extremely comfortable. It’s very different. It tends to happen a bit quicker, which I believe tends to my game a little bit more. You got to change direction in a quicker amount of time in a shorter amount of space, so it’s…

Thursday’s session will begin at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time. It will be open to the public. As always, we will have live updates after practice begins. After it concludes, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy will be speaking with reporters.
