BREAKING NEWS: QB Tua Tagovailoa signs four-year contract extension with Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins said they wanted to get a contract extension completed with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and now they have. The team and their 2020 first-round pick have agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Tagovailoa was selected with the fifth-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, giving the Dolphins the quarterback they coveted for two years. He immediately took over as the team’s starting quarterback, though he battled through injuries through his first four seasons. Last year, in his first year playing in every game, Tagovailoa was selected for his first Pro Bowl after leading the league in passing yards.

He led the league in yards per attempt and passer rating in 2022. He has topped the 100-mark in passer rating in the two seasons with Mike McDaniel as Miami’s head coach.

Last season, Tagovailoa threw for 4,624 yards on a 69.3 percent completion rate, with 29 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and a 101.1 passer rating. His yardage, completion percentage, and touchdowns were all career highs.

The new deal ends a mounting story line of the Dolphins and Tagovailoa reaching an impasse on the new contract. Tagovailoa had been set to play the 2024 season on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, with the potential of the team franchise tagging him ahead of free agency in 2025. He will now remain with the team, with expectations that he will continue to improve his play and elevate the team for the next several years.

With the signing of Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ front office can now turn its attention to extending safety Jevon Holland, who is scheduled to be a free agent this year, and re-working wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s contract.
