Chiefs News: Hollywood Brown talks wide receiver corps, Patrick Mahomes
After signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in March of this year, wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has been building relationships off the field with his new teammates, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.
The trio was seen courtside at an NBA finals game, and Brown also spent some of his offseason working out with Mahomes. Brown said those offseason moments helped with his transition to the team.
“I think it started way back in offseason,” Brown said of building his relationship with Mahomes. “It made it a lot easier for me coming to the team; he had me on the same page [of] a lot of things.”
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is mindful of the experience Brown brings to the locker room in his sixth NFL season. He said the offensive is “really looking forward to getting him going” and that he’s pleased with Brown’s progress on his new team.
“You can feel his veteran leadership,” Nagy said of Brown’s first training camp with the team. “He’s kept his play speed, when he runs routes downfield, being able to track the football with Patrick, but then also not make the same mistake twice, he’s really in good mental shape, physical shape – all of that right now.
Brown said his quick ability to adapt to his new environment is the expectation he has set for himself in his position.
“I mean, it’s my job,” he said of the receiver’s ability to adapt quickly. “[To] really just come in and show the guys that if I could come in, and I could be on top of things, and I just got here; it pushes everyone else to be better, and it raised the competition in the room.”
So far, Brown likes what he sees among his fellow wide receivers and has high expectations for the 2024 season.
“I’m excited,” he said of the wide receiving corps’ potential. “God willing, we all stay healthy, and we just keep building, keep pushing each other.
“I think the sky’s the limit ([on] what we could do.”
Opening up the playbook with deep passes from Mahomes was partially the reason for his signing — and Brown believes the wide receivers on the roster now can improve from last season.
“We got the guys to do it,” Brown said. “Coach (Andy Reid) is putting us in a great position to do it, and Pat puts it on the money every time, so we’ve been lighting it up, and it’s been fun.”
