Chiefs News: Mandatory minicamp observations from Tuesday’s Day 1
The Kansas City Chiefs are back in town for three days of mandatory minicamp, which runs from Tuesday through Thursday. Tuesday brought great weather for football, with temperatures in the mid-70s as practice began just before 11 a.m.
I’ll have notes for Tuesday and Wednesday practices, with a fitness test anticipated for Thursday. Let’s begin with what I saw in Tuesday’s workout:
Attendance and participation
Kansas City’s workout was well-attended, with only three absences, including kicker Harrison Butker (illness), defensive end BJ Thompson (illness) and offensive guard Joe Thuney (pectoral). Safety Justin Reid kicked in place of Butker.
Defensive tackles Isaiah Buggs and Chris Jones, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (who missed all OTA media looks) practiced on Tuesday.
Although they participated, linebacker Leo Chenal, cornerback Jaylen Watson and running back Isiah Pacheco were limited. Chenal and Watson were involved in position drills but not scrimmaging, and Pacheco participated in seven-on-seven work but not 11-on-11.
The players of the day
Wide receiver Rashee Rice stood out on offense.
Offensive player of the day: Rashee Rice
– Rice won the day. In 11-on-11, Rice had 5 catches, including 3 touchdowns. In 7-on-7 work, he added 3 catches, including a touchdown. Any off-the-field stuff has very clearly not impacted anything on the field, based on this look.

Safety Bryan Cook stood out on defense.
Defensive player of the day: Bryan Cook
– Cook did not appear to miss a rep here despite last year’s injury. Surprised by how fast he looks
– During 7s, Kelce tipped ball in the air that Cook brought in for an interception. In 11s, later, Cook broke up another Kelce target.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 11, 2024
Other offensive observations
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes nearly hit wide receiver Hollywood Brown… twice. But it was not to be.
Offensive notes (11-on-11)
– The Chiefs are emphasizing a return to downfield passing, and QB Patrick Mahomes’ two best shots today were just out of Brown’s reach. I noticed DB Chamarri Conner close in pursuit of the two misfires.
– TE Noah Gray made an early diving catch.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 11, 2024
Wide receiver Skyy Moore caught a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Carson Wentz.
Offensive notes (11-on-11)
– WR Skyy Moore scored a TD on a slant from QB Carson Wentz. Moore held onto the ball despite some bumps and reach-ins from several defenders.
– Mahomes to WR Justin Watson and Chris Oladokun to WR Cornell Powell went for TDs.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 11, 2024
It appears Brown did not have to worry about any lateral passes in Arizona with the Cardinals. Perhaps tight end Travis Kelce needs to give running back Louis Rees-Zammit a shot.
Offensive notes (7-on-7)
– After a catch, Kelce attempted a lateral to Hollywood. Lol moment. This is not something he is ready for yet. Kelce later had a TD off a pick play.
– TE Jared Wiley high-pointed a touchdown from Mahomes in RZ work. Wiley looks like he belongs, so far.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 11, 2024
Roster hopeful Nikko Remigio continued to make the most of whatever reps he was afforded.
Offensive notes (7-on-7)
– WR Nikko Remigio did a nice job on a broken play. Knew Wentz was looking in his direction and fought off a defender to get open as he backpedaled toward the far right pylon for a TD.

…and a roundup of the targets on the day:
Patrick Mahomes’ targets
Rice (9), Kelce (7), Brown (3), Wiley (3), RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (2), Gray (2), WR Cornell Powell, RB Deneric Prince, WR Justin Watson

Other defensive observations
Other defensive notes
– LB Jack Cochrane would have had a coverage sack during early 11-on-11 work.
– CB Keith Taylor had two pass breakups (Mahomes, Wentz) in 7-on-7.
– Rookie S Kamal Hadden jumped a route and nearly picked QB Ian Book, also in 7-on-7.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 11, 2024
