Chiefs Training Camp: Day 12 observations from August 4
On Sunday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to their field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for another practice of the team’s 2024 training camp.
A lighter 10-10-10 session, this was the 12th of 19 public sessions on the practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. Six of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.
Arrowhead Pride lead analyst Ron Kopp was there. Ron posted some observations on social media — starting with the team’s emphasis on misdirection and screens.
There was a focus on misdirection and play action today. 15 worked a lot of under-center run actions, booting out of them and hitting drags/crossers
There was also a lot of work on the screen game to go with that naturally

Deneric Prince got a chunk of the first-team work.
Isiah Pacheco was unsurprisingly the lead back, but Deneric Prince continued to work in with Mahomes & Co
He got roughly 1/3 of the starting RB snaps during live team periods by my count
Worked a delay screen at one point with 1st team OL (Wentz at QB)

Meanwhile, Carson Steele got a rep as a fullback.
Clyde got a look or 2, but mostly on 2nd team
The 2nd unit was mainly him and Carson Steele working at RB. Steele was the lone back in a few sets, one toss and a delay screen as a few of the reps
He also worked with Mahomes & Co. in a 6-OL package. 3-point stance, lead blocking

The Chiefs mostly stuck with three wideouts — but others got reps, too.
KC uses a heavy rotation of WRs with Mahomes & the starting unit
The starting 3 in 11p continues to be Brown, Rice & Worthy — but Skyy & Mecole ran a ton of routes today with Mahomes
Mecole hauled in one bomb TD on a post route. It was one of many deep completions for Pat

The other wideouts played, but didn’t have their numbers called very often.
There wasn’t as much action for Justyn Ross or Nikko Remigio, but they did have plenty of snaps with 15 at QB
Montrell Washington & Cornell Powell also had a few reps
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
Unsurprisingly, Mahomes feasted on the second-team defense.
I counted 5 completed would-be TDs for Mahomes against the reserves, all on long-developing pass plays
Rice, Worthy & Mecole each had 1 a piece
Brown had 2: one on a deep Post, another down the sideline

Justin Watson was back at practice.
Justin Watson is the projected 4th WR, and was on the practice field. He didn’t take any snaps with the starters, but ran routes with reserves
Had one catch over the middle with Jaylen Watson on his back
He was staying after practice running extra routes with Oladokun throwing
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
Notice to the NFL: Rashee Rice is still around — and can still kick your ass.
The play-action emphasis gave us a reminder of how dangerous Rice is on the move with a running start
They used him as the flat route on play-action bootlegs, getting him the ball quickly and letting him turn upfield with momentum
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
He was also used creatively in the screen game: lined up tight to the OL, he chipped the edge rusher before releasing for a delayed screen
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
The former Duke tight end isn’t giving up ground to any other tight end without a fight.
With so much run action, KC was running plenty of plays out of 12 & 13 personnel
Noah Gray stood out with a strong performance.
Early in team, he released over the middle after a fake handoff. Mahomes threw it behind him, but Gray cleanly grabbed it one handed and continued on
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
Gray also caught a deep pass from Carson Wentz running with the 1st team OL.
He booted left from under center, then threw back across the field to Gray on a Waggle, who secured it
Mahomes & Kelce had a similar rep that fell incomplete at one point
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
Jared Wiley and Irv Smith were quiet despite playing a ton of snaps. Important to note that play-action passes out of heavy formations doesn’t mean everybody is releasing into a route
— Ron Kopp Jr. (@Ron_Kopp) August 4, 2024
In all, Sunday’s practice was a nice reminder of how creative the team can get with heavier personnel
KC’s TEs can still stretch a defense horizontally and vertically out of 13p, run looks
A RB like Carson Steele may give KC some flexibility in 21p / Jumbo packages

The next practice will be Monday at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time. It will be open to the public. As always, we will have live updates after practice begins. After it concludes, head coach Andy Reid will be speaking with reporters.
