Chiefs Training Camp: Day 2 observations from July 22
On Monday morning, the Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for the second full practice session of the team’s 2024 training camp.
This was the second of 19 public practices at the practice field next to MWSU’s Spratt Stadium. 16 of the remaining practices will be open to the public — click here for details and a full schedule — while one more will be open only to the team’s Season Ticket Members.
Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media — starting with yet another beautiful day for practice.
The weather remained manageable in St. Joseph, with the temperature in the low 70s as practice began. The #Chiefs are in the midst of their five-day ramp-up period which will lead to a day off on Thursday and the pads coming on Friday.

It turned out that wide receiver Xavier Worthy was merely hamstrung by an illness. (See what I did there?)
There were some reader concerns when we reported that WR Xavier Worthy wasn’t spotted following his big day on Sunday, but the team later confirmed it was just an illness. Better an illness than a hamstring is what I say.
CB Kelvin Joseph was excused.

The rest of the missing players were carryovers from Sunday.
The NFI players (S Justin Reid and DL BJ Thompson) remained out, as did the PUP players (DT Derrick Nnadi, DL Charles Omenihu, LG Joe Thuney and WR Jaylen Watson).
Reid (quad) being out is affording him an opportunity to dig in from a mental standpoint

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Justin Reid: “I told him, ‘We can use this as a positive.’ Just have him dig deeper into the playbook. Not just learn his position, learn the others. He does that, anyway. You guys know J-Reid is a pretty sharp dude. But he’s going…

It’s not clear whether Rashee Rice will now be required to carry a football with him at all times.
During the initial 7-on-7 period, WR Rashee Rice caught two passes that led to fumbles. LB Drue Tranquill and CB Trent McDuffie would have been credited with the two takeaways.

Nick Bolton on the turnover emphasis in meetings: “Forced fumbles, punching the ball out. I think we were very good at it my first year here (2021) and then it slowly trickled down, and now we’re down to 27th. [We want to] get forced fumbles, attack the football, rip at the…

Across the board, the defense was pretty fired up.
Also in 7-on-7, Tranquill added another pass breakup of Patrick Mahomes targeting Kadarius Toney, and CB Nazeeh Johnson broke up a Carson Wentz pass.
S Jaden Hicks broke up a Mahomes pass in red-zone 7-on-7 work. Mahomes finished RZ with a wide-open TD to Hollywood Brown.

In 11-on-11, Mahomes nearly converted deep tries to Brown and Mecole Hardman. McDuffie broke up the pass targeting Hardman. LB Curtis Jacobs very nearly picked off QB Chris Oladokun.

In his final 11-on-11 session of the day, CB Joshua Williams picked off Mahomes and CB DJ Miller intercepted a Wentz pass tipped up by CB Nic Jones.

Pete noted some patterns that are starting to emerge.
These ramp-up practices are abbreviated, so keep that in mind, but the rotations at OT, CB (the biggest battles of training camp) were still intriguing.
LT Wanya Morris and RT Jawaan Taylor rotated first-team reps with LT Kingsley Suamataia and RT Chu Godrick.

The first-team cornerbacks in this look were Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams, and the second-team cornerbacks were Nazeeh Johnson and Ekow Boye-Doe (Joseph excused).
Spagnuolo confirmed the candidates for starting CB opposite McDuffie to be Williams, Johnson and Watson.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes spread the ball around quite a bit.
Mahomes targets on the day (team work): Rice (5), Brown (4), TE Noah Gray (3), TE Travis Kelce (2), Toney (2), TE Jared Wiley (2), RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, WR Skyy Moore, WR Justyn Ross

The next practice will take place on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time. That session will be open to the public. As always, we will have live updates after practice begins. Head coach Andy Reid will be among those speaking to the press when practice concludes.
