Chiefs’ training camp observations from Rookie Day 2: Thursday July 18
The Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph on Thursday morning, conducting the second session of the team’s 2024 training camp.
Just as on Wednesday, Thursday’s practice was limited to rookies, quarterbacks and a smattering of other players — most of them returning from injuries. There will be one more of these sessions on Friday morning before the rest of the team reports on Friday afternoon. The first full practice (which will be open to the public) will take place on Sunday morning.
Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there, tweeting observations from the session — starting with a beautiful day.
Weather has been comfortable these past two days in St. Joseph, with Thursday’s practice beginning with temps in the low 70s. This never persists, so we should all enjoy it while it lasts.

No one was hurt on Wednesday, so everyone was back for Thursday.
No change in attendance, with the same 37 players from Wednesday spotted on the field on Thursday (you can find that list here: https://t.co/uZxlXYum1W

But that’s not to say the team is fully healthy.
The veterans in camp for injury — Derrick Nnadi, Charles Omenihu and Jaylen Watson — all worked with trainers off to the side. I noticed Watson doing a bit more than the others running-wise, which could be a sign he is headed in the right direction.

The team’s first-round pick is apparently feeling better.
The Chiefs continue to ramp WR Xavier Worthy up, as he was the target of all three of Patrick Mahomes’ passes in the first 7-on-7 period and one of the three targets in the red-zone 7-on-7 period. Worthy caught two of the four passes from Mahomes, including one for a touchdown.

Throughout the red-zone period that featured all four quarterbacks, Worthy caught three of four targets total, all for touchdowns. He seems to be in a good place with one workout to go before the veterans arrive for practice on Sunday.

Some hopeful wideouts made some plays.
2 practice-squad hopefuls at WR — Jaaron Hayek and Kyle Sheets — turned heads Thursday. Early, Hayek high-pointed a pass deep down the left sideline for a great catch. Later, Sheets made back-to-back tough touchdown catches, including one in which CB Kamal Hadden was close by.

There were some standout plays on defense, too.
Defensively, I counted two pass breakups on the day during 7-on-7: S Jaden Hicks against QB Ian Book and S Trey Dean against Mahomes.

It’s just over a week until the first practice in pads.
Beginning this weekend, players will begin a five-day ramp-up period before pads come on, expected right now to be Friday the 26th.
RB Louis Rees-Zammit seems r̶e̶a̶d̶y̶ keen.
Rees-Zammit: “I can’t wait to see the difference. I get the question all the time: what’s harder…

Since Worthy got so much work in the red zone…
We did not see as many targets to TE Jared Wiley in Thursday’s look, but he did come to the podium and discussed what it takes to be a quality red-zone target, one of his roles to be expected in 2024.

Wiley on the red area: “I would just say, once you get in the red zone, everything is a lot faster, a lot more physical, and you really got to know what’s going on. Not only if you’re looking at the defense but what’s going on on the offense. There’s going to be a lot of scramble…

Video time!
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid typically will give Patrick Mahomes and other select veterans off for the Friday workout, so we’ll resume the threads with the entire team on Sunday. Until then… pic.twitter.com/a0bzvwy8Nl

We’ll do all of this again starting on Sunday.
