Mano del Desierto giant hand in Atacama desert, Chile
The most famous giant hand called Mano del Desierto is located in the middle of the Atacama desert, about 75 km south of the city of Antofagasta. This is a work of art by Chilean artist Irarrázabal to honor the victims who suffered injustice and torture during the previous military regime. Mano del Desierto is a concrete block 11 meters high.
The work was built in the early 1980s and completed about 12 years later. A hand lying alone in the middle of a dry desert brings a feeling of sadness, as if it wants to remind visitors of the tragic reality that humans have encountered. In addition, the work also conveys the intention of human weakness and helplessness.
Artist Irarrázabal also created a series of strange hands in many locations around the world. Other versions appeared in many cities.

Another work titled “Punta del Este”, also a work by Irarrázabal, is located in a famous resort town in Uruguay, meaning a warning about the risk of drowning in the sea.
