Phinsider Question Of The Day: Is He Worth It Edition
As every Miami Dolphins fan knows, the team’s starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, is in line for a new deal sometime this offseason. The negotiations have been ongoing all offseason while every other quarterback in line for an extension has received theirs. It seems the team allowing this process to drag out had only cost them more if they are serious about getting Tua a new deal before the season begins. Tua was already going to cost the Dolphins more than 50 million per season on any deal he would sign, but that was before last week. Last week, we heard that the Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence signed a five-year 275 million dollar deal with a 55 million dollar average.
The Lawrence deal has most likely driven Tua’s number per season up, something that the Dolphins could have avoided by completing this deal sooner rather than later. Either way, here we are. Tuas management is certain to point out that Tua has been better than Trevor and thus needs a contract in excess of the 55 million per season average that the Jags handed their starter. While the Dolphins do not have to give Tua a deal before the season begins, having him play on his fifth-year option could lead to a disgruntled starting quarterback. Tua has already signaled that he’s “antsy.” The Dolphins can also use the franchise tag on Tua in 2025, estimated at just over 42 million dollars. If the team were to franchise him a second season in a row in 2026, his salary would be around 50.6 million dollars.
So the Phinsider Question Of The Day is: Do you think Tua is worth more than 55 million dollars per season? Should the Dolphins give Tua a deal that exceeds Trevor Lawerance’s 55 million dollars per season average, or play hardball and offer him what they think is a contract that reflects his actual value?
