Top 3 under-the-radar NFC players on the Cowboys 2024 schedule
3 NFC players to keep your eyes on when they play Dallas
The Dallas Cowboys have their work cut out for them with an arduous 2024 schedule as they look to become the first repeat NFC East champion in 20 years. The marquee games against the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens will bring attention. However, there are a few under-the-radar players from the the Cowboys’ NFC opponents to prepare for when the Cowboys square off against them this season.
Atlanta Falcons: Tyler Allgeier, running back
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY SportsTyler Allgeier, a deep sleeper as an opponent, may not receive the same fanfare as his running back counterpart Bijan Robinson or the other weapons of Atlanta like Drake London and Kyle Pitts. However, in his rookie season, Allgeier made a significant impact, running for over 1,000 rushing yards and averaging nearly five yards per carry.
Despite a slight setback in his sophomore year due to Atlanta’s questionable misuse of their personnel, Allgeier remains an excellent change of pace in support of Robinson and could start in a pinch. With Atlanta’s new offensive coordinator Zac Taylor’s knack for incorporating multiple running backs, the Cowboys should keep a close eye on Allgeier when he takes the field.
Detroit Lions: Brian Branch, cornerback
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORKThe Detroit Lions are rapidly improving under the leadership of Dan Campbell, and his attitude has rubbed off on his team, especially their defense. Led by Aidan Hutchinson, their pass defense has given quarterbacks fits, and their progression along their front seven has spearheaded their turnaround. That side of the ball and the secondary are the beneficiaries.
In just his first year, Brian Branch thrived playing the difficult position of a slot defender. His sudden instincts and hands earned him the reputation of a playmaker who should only get better in his second season. Branch does an excellent job of playing the ball through the receiver and can take a quarterback’s mistake to the house. Before being drafted, scouts raved about his intelligence, and he proved that with three interceptions as a rookie. It is rumored that Branch will also play some at safety, but the second-year player has big potential.
New Orleans Saints: Rashid Shaheed, wide receiver
Dan Powers/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin / USA TODAY NETWORKShaheed is a speed merchant. He was reported to have run a 4.3 forty-yard dash as a collegiate player at Weber State. He can take the top off a defense whenever given the opportunity. The former undrafted player has carved out a niche for himself with New Orleans and is becoming a regular contributor. His explosiveness is a perfect pairing with Chris Olave’s intermediate route tree and Derek Carr’s vertical tendencies as a passer.
Shaheed had his best season as a pro in 2023 as a receiver with 719 yards for 15.6 yards a reception. He is also improving at understanding the soft spot in coverages and making contested catches. As a returner, Shaheed was named an All-Pro as a return specialist, but with the void left by Michael Thomas, he should flourish in his third season as a receiver. Dallas’ safeties need to stay back against him, and the kickers need to keep the ball out of his hands if possible.
